Coyote Denning Season
Spring is a busy time for wildlife. From birds building nests, to sleepy groundhogs stretching their legs as they awaken from hibernation. The melting snow brings a buzz of activity, and while most creatures aren’t a threat to your pets, there are some animals you will have to keep an eye out for.
Coyotes are very active this time of year, and are typically more visible and territorial in April and May due to denning season. Coyotes are quite protective of their pups and will defend their space if necessary. They may see your pet as a threat, so it is best to steer clear of coyotes and their dens while you’re out, enjoying nature.
If you do encounter a coyote while out with your pet, here are some tips to keep you and your pet safe.
1. Keep your dog leashed at all times: You may trust your dog to be off-leash during walks, but this poses a greater risk of them wandering into a coyote’s territory. Keep them on-leash, close by your side and avoid thick vegetation where coyotes might hide.
2. Be aware of active times: Since they are primarily nocturnal, coyotes are most active at dawn and dusk. Plan your walks around these times, or be vigilant during these hours.
3. Report sightings: If you happen to see a coyote, try to report the area on your neighbourhood or community dog-friendly Facebook page. These tips can help others avoid the area or be on the lookout.
4. Use protective tools: Making loud noises either by yelling or with the use of a noisemaker could help scare a coyote away. There are also protective accessories your dog can wear such as a coyote vest.
We share this land with our coyote friends and though they can sometimes be dangerous, if we provide them with space and take precautions with our pets, we can keep ourselves and our animals safe from harm and learn to coexist.
