We can't wait to introduce you to your new best friend!

Thank you for choosing to adopt! Adoption positively impacts the lives of both our pets and adopters, and it’s an incredible journey that we can’t wait to start with you. Please know that we’re not only here to introduce you to your new best friend, but also to support you in the adoption process and transition. In order to find loving homes for all our animals we are currently accepting both adoption walk-ins and scheduled appointments.

Adoption FAQ

Here are a few important things to know about adopting from the Humane Society:

The Steps to Adopt

Step 1: View our adoptable pets online under the adopt tab or come in to the shelter in person

You can view all of their information, bio, and pictures to determine who might be a match for you or your family. Our list of available pets change frequently, so check back often!
Please note that some pets are currently in foster homes, and it may take a day or so to bring them back to the shelter for meet-and-greets with potential adopters.

Step 2: See a pet you’d like to adopt?

Complete our online adoption application below. Alternatively, you can also come in for a walk-in adoption during our adoption hours. Please make sure to bring all members of your household (including all resident dogs if you are looking to add another dog to your family).

Please note we process applications in order of submission, with walk-ins being prioritized.

Step 3: Discuss the pet you would like to adopt with an adoption counsellor

If an online application was submitted, one of our adoption counsellors will then get in touch with you within 24 hours for a phone interview and if a match, we will arrange a time for you to come in to meet the pet. Only those selected will be contacted for a phone interview.

If coming in for a walk-in adoption, an adoption counsellor will discuss the pet and answer any questions in person.

Step 4: Meet the pet

You will have the opportunity to spend quality time with the pet, get to know their personality, and discuss any questions or concerns you may have with our adoption counsellor. For dogs, we do meet and greets with adopters’ dogs in order to evaluate compatibility.

Step 5: If it's a Match - Take Your Pet Home!

Please come prepared to take your new family member home - collar and leash for dogs, carrier for cats (or you can opt for a cardboard carrier), or appropriate carrier for small animals. Many of our dogs have a training requirement. This must be arranged with an approved trainer before completing the adoption, or if training is through the Humane Society, it can be paid for at the time of adoption.

The Value of Adopting

Adoption Fees

Our adoption fees take into consideration the value of adoption when all of a pet's routine medical costs are included. In most cases, the cost of adoption does not cover the costs that are incurred for an animal. We proudly fundraise to help offset the costs and to ensure that our animals get a second chance at life.

Vet Services

Within the last decade, we have opened a companion animal hospital in our Kitchener centre and a satellite hospital in our Stratford centre. While they focus on the health and wellness of the homeless pets we have coming through our doors, they also provide a number of public facing programs. Today we offer a variety of services including spay/neuter, rabies vaccination, microchipping, and veterinary outreach aimed at keeping people and pets together.
